Principal's Message

Letter to the Community:

Why do we go to school? This is the question I asked myself for years, and the same question our students ask on a regular basis. Think about it, attending school was never a choice. You started school at a young age because your parents enrolled you. School at its earliest form was designed to help expand our knowledge and teach basic skills to be a productive citizen. As time went on we developed a school environment to meet the needs of the industrial age by moving from a one room schoolhouse to what we know as school today. However, we have moved well beyond the industrial years. I believe we have created expectations unobtainable for many of our students because of the importance we put on standardized testing and a one style fits all educational environment.

Many of you were successful because you were “good at school.” Our students, on the other hand, have not been good at school. That is why they are with us! My years here at North Lake High School have helped me realize that our students’ lack of success at their traditional settings has nothing to do with their intellect, but rather their work ethic. At some point along their journey they lost interest in school because of adversity, boredom and/or a lack of focus.

Luckily, North Lake High School is different! With the expansion of resources and technology we are learning to teach and learn in a different way. Not all students are college bound (though some of our students go on to college). Many of our students have different interests related to the trade and service industries, military and/or entrepreneurship. We see the potential in all students that come to us. Our goal is to meet each of our students where they are at and equip them with the skills needed to move to the next phase of their life.

If you are, or someone you know is, struggling with school, please come check out what we have to offer. I know you can find success at North Lake!

Sincerely,

Chad Johnson
